LERTXUNDI RUNS SECOND IN EL JOVEN PREP
Bongo Racing Stable's two-year-old Lertxundi forced the early pace but was unable to hold off the closing charge of heavily favored Sheri's Rubiano, in a grassy seven and one-half furlong conditioned allowance race run Saturday at Retama Park. The winner was clocked in 1:33.26 with Lertxundi two lengths behind at the finish.
Out of Shields Thoroughbreds’ mare Kendra (by Dynaformer), this was Lerxundi’s first try on the turf. The W. Shannon Hastings trainee was ridden by Jeremy Collier, prepping for the $100,000 El Joven Stakes to be run at Retama Park on September 3rd.
"It is so tough to stretch out on the turf," Hasting's said post-race. "Two turns and a new surface can really confuse a young horse but Lertxundi came through with flying colors. I think he'll move forward off this race and be ultra-tough in the El Joven."

RACE FOR GLORY ROMPS HOME IN CAVONNIER STAKES AT OAK TREE
Race for Glory, a 2YO colt bred by Shields Thoroughbreds, scored a decisive victory in the $80,850 Cavonnier Stakes Wednesday at Oak Tree. Robert and Beverly Lewis of Newport Beach purchased this son of Cape Town at the April 2003 Keeneland Two Year Old in Training sale for $600,000.
Ridden by Mike Smith at 117 pounds, Race for Glory ran seven furlongs in 1:22.46 on a fast track. The colt’s winning margin of seven lengths is the largest in the stake's history.
Race for Glory began his career with a maiden victory at Arlington Park near Chicago and then finished fourth in a $98,000 stakes race last month at Ellis Park in Kentucky. The $48,510 first prize pushed his earnings to $71,010 with a 2-0-0 record from three starts.
Mike Smith, reported, "He was real professional. Greg (assistant to D. Wayne Lukas, Greg Falk) told me he was very professional in the morning. You go inside, out, sit off horses, behind them, in front of them, just ride it like it comes up. He stood great in the gate and came out really well, relaxed really good laying second and when I called on him, he was gone."
Greg Falk, assistant to D. Wayne Lukas, said "You can just throw that one out (his fourth by 12 3/4 lengths at Ellis Park on Aug. 17). I don't think he liked the track that day. He just wasn't himself. This (race today) is the colt that broke his maiden at Arlington (by six lengths in his debut on July 13). I just told Mike (Smith) to ride his race, he'll take care of himself."
Race for Glory is out of the Shields stakes-placed mare Charming Gal, by Slew’s Royalty, from the female family of Westward Gal. This is her first foal. Charming Gal has a Bertrando colt weanling, and is open for 2004. She will be sent to Kentucky for breeding in January.
